School’s Out…Now What?

Updated: Aug 16, 2019

School’s out for the summer and the kids are excited…well, most of them anyway.

For the 22 million children who depend on schools for free or reduced-priced meals, summer vacation may not be something to look forward to and one thing is missing –  a steady source of food and nutrition. School-aged children obtain 50% of their calories from food eaten at school. However, during summer vacation, with school no longer in session, many food-insecure children lose access to meals for free or reduced prices. During the school year, nutritious meals are available through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. But those programs end when school lets out for the summer. Children in communities do not need to go hungry this summer.

Our recipient agencies use the food donated to Waste Not to feed hungry children day in and day out at their facilities, all year long. By donating to Waste Not, you are donating to these charities that service the people of the Valley. With your donations, we are able to transport this life-sustaining food to our dedicated routes so we can feed over 75,000 people a year. We are the nonprofit for the nonprofits and we love what we do.
