Every parent wants to give their child the best possible start in life, but sometimes the path isn’t easy. This was the case for Cristian and Serena.

When Cristian and Serena found out they were expecting their first child, their hearts overflowed with excitement about growing their small family. Yet woven into their joy was uncertainty, leaving them to question how they could give their child the best life possible.

The turning point was when Serena learned that her employer would not support her needs during her pregnancy and postpartum. Determined to find a better fit, Serena decided to leave her job to pursue a better-paying one. However, living on a single source of income for an extended period became emotionally and financially challenging. Cristian and Serena often found themselves struggling to afford the necessities, such as food.

During this time, Serena and her husband, Cristian, sought out help from one of Waste Not’s partner food pantries, St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church. Every month, St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church distributes food boxes containing all the basics, including snacks, canned and boxed goods. Thanks to the help of Waste Not, neighbors are also able to receive fresh produce, eggs, salad mixes and pre-made meals. This lovely accommodation makes it easier to put dinner on the table when their hands are full.

While the past year has been full of challenges for Cristian and Serena, things are finally starting to look up.

"It's definitely been a little bit of a rough patch this past year, but it's getting better," said Serena.

In January 2025, their daughter, Angelica, was born. And they couldn’t be happier. In addition, both Cristian and Serena were able to find better-paying jobs that allow them to accommodate their needs as they figure out parenthood together. Although they still receive their monthly food boxes, the couple is incredibly grateful for the support that helps them regain their footing.

Without the extra expenses of food, Cristian and Serena can pay their bills and save for the future. Their goal is to save enough for a house with a backyard where Angelica can play and grow.

“Having some help just really helps us a lot,” Serena shared with a wide grin. “It keeps us from spending that money that we could potentially save for her.”

Now, as they celebrate their first holiday season as a family of three, Cristian and Serena are filled with gratitude and a lot less stress. While the past few years have been challenging, their determination and love for their daughter have carried them through uncertainty. With the help of Waste Not and its partner, this holiday season is not just about getting by; it’s about sharing joy, beginning new traditions and creating lifelong memories with their daughter.

Cristian and Serena’s family is one of the thousands of families across Arizona facing food insecurity. With the uncertainty surrounding the future of food assistance and programs like SNAP, more Arizonans will rely on Waste Not to provide food on their tables this holiday season. That is why your generosity is more important than ever. To make this holiday season brighter for families like Cristian and Serena’s, consider giving the gift of a healthy meal
